I don't have a grinder, can you grind the coffee for me?
Absolutely, when ordering you can choose whole beans (if you have a grinder at home), or you can choose pre-ground coffee and the desired grind size, depending on how you are going to prepare your coffee. You can choose this when ordering.
For more information about the best grind for which brewing method, see the question just below.
Which type of coffee grind should I choose for the different brewing methods I use?
- Whole beans:
Many coffee lovers prefer whole beans because they can grind them at home to their desired fineness, which ensures the freshest coffee.
- Coarse grind:
Suitable for brewing methods such as French Press and cold brew.
- Medium grind:
Ideal for filter coffee makers and percolators.
- Fine grind:
Suitable for espresso machines and moka pots (Bialetti).
When do you roast the coffee?
We roast in small batches every week, depending on the orders coming in, so we can always deliver freshly roasted coffee. You can always check the roast date on your coffee bag.
Can I consume my coffee immediately after delivery?
For optimal taste, we recommend waiting a few days after the roasting date, which you will find on the packaging. This is because freshly roasted coffee beans build up CO2 during the roasting process, which causes a bitter taste and less balanced aromas. Allowing the coffee to degas for a few days allows the CO2 to escape and gives the coffee beans time to develop their full aroma and flavor profile. This ensures a richer and fuller taste experience when making your coffee.
How is your coffee packaged?
All our freshly roasted coffee is packed and sealed in specially designed packaging. Our coffee bags are 100% recyclable, so please recycle with PMD (plastic). They contain a valve and a zipper for optimal preservation of the coffee. The valve allows the coffee to degas the CO² that has accumulated during the roasting process, without letting in oxygen. This way the coffee stays fresh for a long time. However, we recommend consuming your coffee within 6 months for best results.
What is specialty coffee?
Specialty coffee refers to coffee of exceptional quality, valued for its unique flavor profile and careful production process. This coffee is often grown in specific regions under ideal climatic conditions and with great attention to sustainable agricultural practices. After harvesting, the coffee beans are carefully processed, carefully selected and professionally roasted to bring out their optimal flavor. Specialty coffee is rated on a 100-point scale by certified cuppers, and coffee with a score of 80 or higher is considered specialty coffee. This coffee offers complex flavors and aromas not found in regular coffee, making it a favorite choice for coffee lovers and connoisseurs.
What is the difference between Single Origin Coffee and Blend Coffee?
Single Origin Coffee:
- Origin: Single origin coffee comes from one specific region, country, or even a single farm.
- Flavor profile: This coffee has a unique and often recognizable flavor profile that reflects the characteristics of the region of origin, such as climate, soil and processing methods.
- Traceability: It is easier to trace the origin and growing conditions of the coffee beans, often resulting in higher quality control and transparency.
- Example: For example, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee is known for its floral and fruity flavors.
Blend Coffee:
- Origin: Blend coffee consists of a mix of coffee beans from different regions or countries.
- Flavor profile: By combining beans with different flavors, a blend can provide a more balanced and consistent flavor profile. This can provide more complex flavors and a versatile coffee experience.
- Goal: Blends are often formulated to create certain flavor profiles or to provide consistency, especially in commercial coffee products.
- Example: A popular espresso blend may consist of beans from Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia, with each region contributing specific properties to the end result.
In short, single origin coffee offers a unique and specific taste experience from a single source, while blend coffee offers a balanced and versatile taste by combining beans from different regions.
What is the difference between a light roast and a dark roast?
Light Surf:
- Colour: Light brown in color, sometimes also called 'cinnamon roast'.
- Flavor profile: This roasting preserves and accentuates the original, complex flavors and aromas of the coffee beans, such as fruity, floral and acidic notes. The result is a bright, vibrant and refined taste that brings out the unique characteristics of the beans.
- Caffeine: Light roast contains slightly more caffeine than dark roast.
- Texture: The coffee beans are drier because the oils have not yet risen to the surface.
- Burning process: Roasted to an internal temperature of approximately 180-205°C (356-401°F), with the first crack just beginning or just completing.
- Our choice: For this reason we have opted for lighter roasts, because they bring out the complex and subtle flavors of the coffee better.
Dark Branding:
- Colour: Dark brown to almost black, also called 'French roast' or 'Italian roast'.
- Flavor profile: This roasting provides a deeper, richer and often bitter taste. The original, complex flavors of the beans are lost and replaced by heavier flavors caused by the roasting process, such as chocolate notes and roasted nuts. This causes many of the delicate and refined flavors to disappear.
- Caffeine: Dark roast contains slightly less caffeine than light roast.
- Texture: The coffee beans are shinier due to the oils that have risen to the surface.
- Burning process: Roasted to an internal temperature of approximately 225-250°C (437-482°F), often past the second crack.
In summary, light roasting provides a better and more complex taste experience, while dark roasting takes away the delicate flavors. That is why we have opted for lighter roasts to get the best flavors and aromas from our coffee.
